Your blood pressure is one of the functions of your body that often works invisibly. Millions of Americans have blood pressure that’s too high (a condition also known as hypertension), and many are unaware they have it. That’s why it’s so important to be proactive about monitoring your health.

Eastern Oklahoma Chiropractic provides treatments for reducing the pain and stress that often contribute to elevated blood pressure and other health problems. Research also shows that chiropractic neck adjustments can correct misalignments that may raise blood pressure.

How Hypertension Affects Your Health

As your heart pumps blood to the rest of your body, it exerts force against the walls of your arteries.

A normal blood pressure is at or below 120/80. The first number (systolic) measures artery pressure from heart beats. The second number (diastolic) shows the pressure between beats, when your heart rests. If this pressure gets too strong, it can damage the heart, leading to strokes and heart attacks.

Causes of elevated blood pressure include family history, poor diet, and conditions such as diabetes, high cholesterol and kidney disease. Sometimes a spinal misalignment may contribute to raised blood pressure.

Research Shows Neck Adjustments Reduce Blood Pressure

A 2007 study found that chiropractic neck adjustments given to blood pressure patients lowered their pressure.

In the study, people with mildly elevated blood pressure were randomly divided into two groups—one received a specialized neck adjustment, while the control group was given a sham adjustment. The patients stayed off any blood pressure medications during the study.

The adjustments involved the spine’s very top vertebra, known as the Atlas vertebra, which sits just below the skull. Its structures protect spinal nerves, as well as the arteries and veins that carry blood to and from the brain. Even small misalignments of the vertebra can cause injury and circulation problems.

By the end of the study, patients who’d been given an authentic neck adjustment showed a notable improvement in blood pressure readings. Their systolic (top) number went down by 17 points, and the diastolic (bottom) by 10 points.

It’s also important to note that misalignments of the Atlas vertebra can be present without symptoms. People may unknowingly have misaligned vertebrae and potential health damage–a good reminder of the value of proactive spinal exams.

The Natural Benefits of Chiropractic Treatments

One of the advantages of visiting your chiropractor is getting relief from pain and other health problems without medication.

Any drugs, such as the ones for high blood pressure, come with side effects and extra costs that must be balanced against the benefits. Chiropractic care, in contrast, provides safe treatments without the risks of medications.

Overall, there’s another benefit of caring for your spine: by relieving pain, chiropractic therapies also help to reduce the emotional stress that can send blood pressure in the wrong direction.

Everyone can make a plan to take charge of achieving their best health. Chiropractic care is a vital, safe, and effective element of your good health plan.

Poor positioning when using tech devices and computers may lead to more than just an aching neck or back. Evidence shows increasingly that poor posture can cause long-term health damage.

At Eastern Oklahoma Chiropractic, we want to help you take control of your health naturally, with better lifestyle habits and chiropractic care that promotes wellness for years to come.

Risks of Poor Posture (Neck and Back Positions)

The risks of poor posture have increased in the past year, as many of us had to spend more time communicating on a screen instead of face to face.

When you tilt your head forward to use your phone or look down at your computer screen, you’re doubling the weight of pressure on your spine with every inch forward. Ten pounds of force on your spine can quickly ramp up to forty pounds or more.

Bad posture causes overuse damage in muscles from incorrect use. Your immune system tries to heal the muscles, promoting inflammation that causes problems like arthritis in joints.

How Poor Posture Can Lead to Disease

In addition to causing pain, impaired mobility, and arthritis, bad posture can also damage organs in your thoracic (chest) cavity, such as the heart and lungs, by reducing the space they need to function effectively.

An important study of older adults found that poor posture was actually a predictor of higher mortality rates.

The research involved people who had hyperkyphosis (also known as hunchback), a postural condition that occurs when the upper spine abnormally curves forward.

After following these patients over several years, the researchers found that older people with hyperkyphosis had a mortality risk 44 percent higher than those with normal posture. Most commonly, people died from the effects of atherosclerosis, which causes restricted blood flow in arteries, often resulting in strokes and heart attacks.

Best Practices for Good Posture

You’re not about to give up smartphones and computers, but you can modify your habits when using technology, such as:

Looking up from your phone every ten minutes and pausing to move your neck around

Holding your phone at eye level or lowering eyes instead of tilting your neck

Taking regular breaks from desk work to walk around

Keeping your computer screen at eye level

Using voice dictation instead of typing

Standing (with shoulders back) whenever possible while working

Achieving Good Posture with Chiropractic Care

Regular chiropractor visits align the spine to ensure your posture is correctly positioned. Manual manipulations, along with other treatments, reduce pain, improve mobility and prevent the posture problems that can cause future pain and impair overall health.

Chiropractic therapies safely and naturally play a key role in any family’s plan to stay healthy through years of technology use ahead.

Your brain, central nervous system, and the health of your entire body are directly affected by the health of your spine. When a person’s spine isn’t properly aligned, they lose mobility. This can cause a cycle of pain and further loss of mobility, creating a downward spiral leading to dependence on pain medication, as well as high doctor bills.

Chiropractic care, by contrast, allows your body to return to alignment and better health in a non-invasive, natural way. Our care at Eastern Oklahoma Chiropractic includes holistic treatments that get at the root causes of your back pain.

Back Pain: The Most Common Source of Disability

It’s no surprise that nowadays the most common cause of disability is back pain, particularly in the lower back. More than 80 percent of people suffer from back pain at certain times in their lives, due to causes such as injuries, poor posture or spinal imbalances. Severe back pain is very debilitating, preventing people from working at their jobs, sleeping well, enjoying simple things in life, or even thinking clearly.

The Cycle of Pain Medication Dependence

Patients who are anxious to relieve their pain will often start by taking over-the-counter drugs. When those treatments prove to be ineffective, back pain sufferers may turn to strong prescription drugs. This desperation to ease the pain leads, in the worst cases, to addiction to dangerous drugs such as opioids. Even without drug addiction, a patient’s symptoms may become worse over time, because medications don’t address the underlying causes of pain.

Chiropractic Care: Safer and More Economical

Unlike medication, chiropractic treatment works on healing the body naturally, without the higher expenses of drugs and doctor visits.

In a recent study, researchers looked at the results of patients treated with chiropractic care compared with those who used other types of treatments. The average cost of treatment with a chiropractor was $712, while the average for other types of care averaged out to $1992. Another cost and health saving factor to consider is that safe, natural chiropractic treatments protect patients from the additional expense of treating side effects that may develop when they use drugs to treat their pain.

When we align your spine with gentle chiropractic adjustments, your nervous system regains the power to heal your body and restore your full potential of mobility. This provides you with a natural remedy for pain, without the expense and side effects of drugs. With this safe, holistic approach you have the best of both worlds: reduced pain and more money left over to spend on enjoying your new life potential.

Proactive prevention plans play a crucial role in maintaining optimal health and long-term function. Relying solely on symptoms to determine health can be misleading, as serious conditions like heart attacks often occur without warning signs, catching people off guard. Similarly, cancer, tumors, high blood pressure, and blood vessel plaque may develop for years without any symptoms, only manifesting pain in advanced stages. These conditions are frequently addressed with medications that manage symptoms but rarely tackle the root cause.

Spinal issues follow a similar pattern. Research examining spinal health in young adults found that pathological changes in the cervical spine were just as common in people with symptoms as in those without. This underscores the importance of proactive chiropractic care to detect and address underlying issues early, preventing more serious complications and reducing reliance on symptom-masking drugs.

In the group with no current or previous back or neck pain, the findings noted:

• Disc Protrusion – present in 87% of subjects

• Disc Degeneration – present in 73% of subjects

• Disc Annular Tear – present in 63% of subjects

• Disc Herniation – present in 0% of subjects

In the group with recurrent or persistent neck and/or shoulder pain, the findings noted:

• Disc Protrusion – present in 69% of subjects

• Disc Degeneration – present in 56% of subjects

• Disc Annular Tear – present in 50% of subjects

• Disc Herniation – present in 25% of subjects

The research acknowledged the underlying damage which often occurs with no symptoms present. So much of physical health involves proactive prevention plan. People understand that consistent check-ups and teeth cleaning at the dentist, health physicals with the family physician, and stress tests with a cardiologist remain logical methods of maintaining prolonged health. People also pursue regular cancer screenings to ensure early detection of any adverse conditions before signs and symptoms occur. The same philosophy applies to regular spinal check-ups and adjustments with a Chiropractor. The benefits of a Chiropractic adjustment go well beyond pain relief, impacting overall organ health and function in addition to spinal care. The presence of pain represents advanced stages of spinal concern. The most impactful benefits of Chiropractic care belong to those who experience proactive care to maintain optimal nervous system function.

Chiropractic adjustments improve the function of the entire body through better alignment and mobility in the spine. The spine intimately connects to the brain and central nervous system. Improving the health of the spine and function of the nervous system begins with the onset of a Chiropractic wellness plan. Adjustments benefit the human body with or without the presence of pain, but proactive prevention plan allows the body to maintain maximum performance in advance of many deteriorating conditions. Wellness Chiropractic care focuses on improving and maintaining the health of the spine, nervous system, and the entire body through regular checkups and adjustments. Many Chiropractic patients choose wellness care guided by an understanding that proactive health care empowers people to know their body exists in a state of maximized well-being. Wellness care ensures better mobility, alignment, function, and strength for all ages. People deserve a better model of health care than waiting until the body begins to break down through pain and symptoms of advanced degenerative conditions. Chiropractic provides advanced healthcare for all generations.

The post Dangerous Conditions Exist without the Presence of Pain… Chiropractic care provides proactive prevention plans for optimal long-term function first appeared on Chiropractor Broken Arrow.

The title sounds like a tag line for a new movie or piece of artwork. New research states that permanent bone structure changes take place at the back of the skull as a result of extended amounts of time in a forward head posture position. This causing a growth on back of the skull. Authors of the study attribute the cause of the increased amount of forward head posture to increased time on technology devices such as phones and computers.

Are we really growing horns??

The research evaluated x-ray findings of 1200 subjects ranging from ages 18 to 86 years old. Evaluators call the small bump on the back of the skull an External Occipital Protuberance (EOP). A ligament and muscle attach to the EOP. Researchers found that an extra small bony growth was found at higher incidence in younger adults who had greater degrees of forward head posture. The small horn-like growth appeared to be caused by increased amounts of stress on the muscles, tendons, and ligaments in that area due to forward head posture. As stress loads increase in ligaments, muscles, and tendons for long periods of time, bony deposits form within the body as a protection mechanism.

An increasingly sedentary lifestyle accompanies massive amounts of time spent looking forward and down at devices. An adaptive process takes place within the body to alleviate the added weight and pressure being placed on the back of the head and neck. An incredible amount of strain prompts bone to infiltrate the tendon as muscles at the back of the skull work to prevent the head from falling down to the chest.

The effects of forward head posture

Weight added to the spine dramatically increases when forward head flexion increases at varying intervals. A 0° interval produces a measurable head weight on the neck of 10 to 12 pounds. A 15° interval of forward head posture increases weight on the neck by 27 pounds. A 30° interval increases weight on the neck by 40 pounds. A 45° interval increases the weight on the neck by 49 pounds. A 60° interval increases the weight on the neck by 60 pounds.

The extra stress from forward head posture on the neck and skull produce significant effects. Commentary focuses on the shocking presence of the bone spur but the protrusion registers as the smallest of concerns. The process involved in the bone spur formation indicates a danger and concern far greater than anything superficial. Improper head and neck configuration signify abnormalities in the nervous system and dangerous long-term outcomes for a person’s overall health, function, and performance.

These bone spur formations take a long time to develop. Individuals who suffer from EOP spurs began applying stress and strain to the head and neck area during the early stages of childhood. The length of time needed to form a bone spur suggests that sustained improvement in posture and head positioning prevent accompanying effects and allows for correction and healing. Chiropractic care plays a vital role in helping reduce stress and abnormal spinal positioning which promote disease, discomfort, and long-term health concerns. Research continues to alert people to the dangers of overusing technological devices as they pertain to deteriorating effects on the head, neck, and spine. Chiropractic helps relieve the damaging effects of forward head posture while providing education and care plans for the sustained health and function of the neck, spine, and nervous system.

The current medical model of healthcare unintentionally creates an unreasonable and sometimes dangerous perception of healing. Due to the predominant recommendations and use of prescription drugs, people become accustomed to an expected norm of instant relief and healing. The fast-paced quick fix culture often breeds unrealistic expectations for pain relief and disease resolution. People begin to draw conclusions that healing should be almost instantaneous when genuine healing actually takes time.

Any process which involves adjusting the health and function of the body takes time. Losing weight, healing bones, and gaining muscle represent a few examples of sustained changes to the human organism that improve the body but take time to resolve. People occasionally become frustrated with a perceived lack of results in these areas despite awareness that the process takes time. The topic of pain relief escalates peoples’ impatience even more. Consumers ingest prescription medications and potent pharmaceuticals that numb the body to discomfort and pain in an instant. These pain killers shut down the brain’s pathway for pain and people tend to associate the numbness with healing. These methods of treating discomfort do not actually heal the body or bring about long-term resolution. People need to change their expectations for genuine healing and recovery and change the medical model that associates numbness with health.

Chiropractors represent one of many forms of natural health care practitioner which educate, treat, and communicate plans and procedures to help millions of people recover, heal, and experience a pain free life full of function and performance. One of the hardest lessons to communicate with patients revolves around fully understanding appropriate expectations regarding healing time. Treating the actual cause of pain and discomfort involves taking the time to genuinely repair and heal the body. The process takes time.

A study published in 2016 detailed the importance of time when utilizing a natural form of health care like Chiropractic. The research compared two groups of people. One group received adjustments and the other did not. Patients were evaluated after four weeks and again after twelve weeks. The primary measurements assessed included quality of life, reaction time, and positional sense of specific joints. The scientists wanted to know if the group that got adjusted increased their sense of awareness in specific areas and joints of their body. These measurements determined if Chiropractic adjustments facilitated a decrease in risks of falls and balance related issues. All aspects of measurements (quality of life, reaction time, joint position) improved significantly in the group which received regular Chiropractic adjustments.

The study reinforces endless research that proves the efficacy of Chiropractic adjustments in the treatment and healing of body structure, organs, and a number of other conditions. The issue most people contend with involves the fact that the process of healing and recovery take time. Isolated treatments and pill consumption do not provide the body with time needed to genuinely resolve an unwanted issue. Chiropractic adjustments improve the ability of the brain to receive and send messages to all parts of the body. Yet the body requires time to adjust, rebuild, and resolve. The aforementioned study showed that four weeks of Chiropractic care provided slight improvements to the measurable areas in the variable group. Week twelve recorded significant improvements in all measurable areas. Genuine healing takes time. Chiropractic care provides the most effective form of long-term care and healing for an endless list of painful and uncomfortable conditions, but restoration takes time.

Maximized healing involves knowledge and a commitment to healing. The benefits of Chiropractic extend far beyond pain relief when adjustments unlock the powerful capabilities of the human body. Chiropractic provides long term restoration; the healing is just a matter of time.

The post Healing Takes Time!

If you’re familiar with chiropractic, you’ve likely heard the term, “subluxation.” Dr. Travis Ring of Eastern Oklahoma Chiropractic is trained to detect and correct subluxations in the spine, leading to improved spinal function and overall wellness. For those unfamiliar with the term or those who would like to know more, we’ve put together some simple explanations of this condition and how we, as chiropractors, can treat and correct subluxations.

What is a subluxation?

To put it plainly, it’s when a vertebra has lost its normal position. This loss of position interferes with the function of the surrounding joints and/or tissues. A more in-depth explanation: A subluxation (which can result from physical, chemical, and mental stressors) occurs when one or more spinal vertebrae move out of position and create stress or irritation on nearby nerves, preventing the body from functioning optimally. The goal of the chiropractic adjustment is to remove or correct subluxations, which eliminates any interference to the nervous system and improve spinal function and overall health.

How do I know if I have a subluxation?

It’s critical to understand that subluxations are often painless and they can occur at any time or age. The only way to accurately determine if you have a subluxation in your spine is through a chiropractic evaluation with your doctor of chiropractic.

What are the symptoms of subluxation?

While you can have a subluxation(s) without any noticeable symptoms, there are some indicators or symptoms of subluxation, such as neck pain, back pain, headaches, dizziness or balance issues, muscle spasms, tightness or weakness, reduced mobility, joint pain, numbness or tingling in extremities, low energy and more.

What can subluxations do to the body?

As a profession, we’ve just scratched the surface as to the possible effects subluxation can have on the body. Spinal health is directly related to the health and function of your central nervous system and the removal of subluxations are critical to your overall spinal health. We know that subluxation:

Create dis-ease in the body, decreasing its ability to adapt to stress

Decrease the body’s ability to function at its optimal potential

Accelerate joint aging and cause joint degeneration

Can cause a chain reaction of other health issues

Can cause biostructural and postural problems

Who can treat subluxations?

Chiropractors are the only healthcare providers trained to diagnose and treat subluxations. Experts in the musculoskeletal systems, chiropractic physicians go through years of education and training to learn how to accurately identify and correct subluxations in the spine.

How do chiropractors treat subluxations?

Subluxations are treated using chiropractic adjustment. Highly educated and trained chiropractic physicians perform the adjustment to the spine using their hands or a small instrument. Using a quick and gentle movement, chiropractors apply a specific amount of sudden force to a specific joint to help remove the subluxation, increase the mobility of the joints and improve overall spinal function.

If you have never been to a chiropractor or it’s been a long time, we would love to sit down with you to answer all the questions you have regarding subluxations and your health. We truly believe that everybody should have a chiropractor they know, like and trust. If you would like to schedule your first appointment to see how chiropractic can help what you are going through, please give us a call at 918-940-4630 and set up your consultation with Dr. Ring today!!

The post What Do Chiropractors Do When They Adjust You? first appeared on Chiropractor Broken Arrow.

Do you wake up with pain from sleeping wrong? One of the most frequent complaints chiropractors hear is, “I think I slept wrong and now (fill in the blank) hurts. How do you sleep? Do you wake up in pain? Does your bed partner complain about you tossing and turning all night long? What position should I be sleeping in? You may be surprised at how good you feel in the morning with a few tweaks to how you sleep.

One of the best pieces of advice I have is DO NOT, under ANY circumstance sleep on your stomach. Eight straight hours of your neck is turned to one side and your lower back arching all night is going to leave you in pain the next morning. If you have been sleeping that way your entire life, it is going to take a few weeks of sleepless misery to change your habit, but it will be worth it in the end, stick with it. I recommend using a body pillow to start turning yourself over.

If you are a side sleeper, make sure you have a nice thick pillow supporting your head so that it is in line with the rest of your spine. Also, make sure you are not choosing to sleep on an extra firm bed or that will create pressure points on your shoulders and hips. Putting a pillow between your knees will also help your lower back be better aligned through the night.

For my back sleepers, thank you, you are the least likely to have pain from your sleeping position. I would recommend getting an orthopaedic pillow for your neck that has the lowered area in the middle and roll for your neck to fall over. I would also recommend those of you with lower back pain to put a pillow underneath your knees to provide support for your lower back.

Another question I get constantly is, “what kind of mattress should I sleep on?” Honestly, there is no “one size fits all” when it comes to mattresses because we all have different body shapes and physical demands. Personally, I love the Temper-Pedic mattress that my wife and I have slept on for just over 6 years but I have heard of others complaining about the way it makes them feel. The best piece of advice I can give an individual regarding a mattress is to spend the extra time and money by searching out the appropriate mattress store where the staff has been trained in fitting customers for the correct mattress. Too many times, people shop for mattresses based on the best deal but the experience will tell you that if you spend 1/3rd of your day on something, you want it to be quality. Here in Broken Arrow and the surrounding Tulsa metro area, I recommend stores like Relax the Back, Mattress King and Mattress Firm because their staff is put through ergonomics training to fit the right mattress to the individual.

Keep an eye on how you feel when you wake up in the morning. If you wake up sore or tired, you may need to look to your mattress as the cause of discomfort. Also, don’t neglect pro-active spinal care like chiropractic care, exercises and stretches. The more good stuff you can do on a daily basis, the better and better you are going to feel. If you follow these tips you should enjoy more restful nights and less painful mornings. If you have any questions, remember that we are just a phone call away at 918-940-4630. Thank you for allowing us to be your chiropractor.

The post What Position Should I Be Sleeping In To Best Benefit Me? first appeared on Chiropractor Broken Arrow.

This is the time of year where I get the most calls of people having back pain from yard work. If you have been a relative couch potato all winter and then got outside this weekend and dug a bunch of holes, tilled the garden and raked leaves, it is probably pretty obvious why your back hurts. Allowing yourself to become sedentary for months and then doing repetitive activities you haven’t done for a long while will often hurt.

If you are relatively fit and work out regularly, working in the yard is just one of those facts of life that tend to aggravate any weak spot you already have in your spine. Unlike working out at the gym, the forces on your body in the yard are less predictable ( how much force will it take to pull that tree root out? Lots and then none as you careen backwards). The tasks involve unexpected resistance ( we have all been digging holes and hit rocks sending reverberations all the way up our skeletons). Yard projects also tend to last longer than workouts and I know that I try just to rush through them without taking breaks to stretch.

Odds are, you have already tweaked yourself and are experiencing your own back pain from yard work or you wouldn’t be reading this so call our office at 918-940-4630 and schedule an appointment. Also, please start icing the area for a new complaint and transition to heat after a couple days.

To prevent future back pain from yard work, here are some tips I have learned over the years. First, if you have a big project like a great big truck of mulch that you want to install, commit to doing it for an hour and then taking a break. I am also impatient and when I decide to do something I want it done yesterday. That personality has not served me well over the years when it comes to yard work. One hour, then take a break and kick your feet up, stretch a little, drink a refreshing beverage and see how you feel before you go back to hour number two (always remember to stay hydrated especially here in the oppressive heat of Broken Arrow, OK). Do this every hour or so. Six hours of doing repetitious activities that your body isn’t used to will hurt just about everyone.

Also, please identify your weak spots of your body and stretch them after you do your yard work. I am not suggesting a 45 minute stretch session, but 3-4 stretches on the parts that you already know will bother you the most. Don’t have a weak link on that body of yours? Yeah right, we all have one. If you really think that, you aren’t paying enough attention to your tight muscles. Those are my people who really get hurt when they hurt themselves because they don’t pay attention to the warning signs of an oncoming injury.

As always, our chiropractic office here in Broken Arrow, OK is here to help. If you have questions or have hurt yourself, please give us a call at 918-940-4630 to set up your first visit. We promise to do all we can to have you back on your feet as quickly as possible. Thank you for allowing Dr. Travis Ring and Eastern Oklahoma Chiropractic to be a part of your health team!

The post Back Pain from Yard Work in Broken Arrow first appeared on Chiropractor Broken Arrow.

If you are a parent, you have been through this scenario…. Your child is hot, flushed, glassy-eyed and obviously not feeling well. Your diagnosis is fever!! You are very concerned and even a little panic sets in. After all, you have been trained to think of fever as something to be treated and even feared. Let’s take a step back and calmly look at this thing we call a fever.

We’ve all been taught that “normal” body temperature is 98.6 F, right? WRONG!! 98.6 F only represents an average of the “normal” body temperature. When you look at the population, you quickly realize that what is normal for you or your child may not be what is normal for everybody. In fact, your child’s temperature can hover anywhere between 97 and 100 F and still be considered “normal”.

Fever is simply an increase in heat. Normal body heat, aka “fever” is the result of your child’s body working as it was designed and programmed to function under the perfect control of the nervous system. So the question remains, “What should I do about my child’s fever”?

To answer that question appropriately, let’s first take a step back and see what is actually happening inside your body. To help your child recover when they are fighting a flu bug or other infection, two things happen.

First, the nervous system commands an increase in heat production in order to literally “burn” the invading germ, which can only survive at a “normal” body temperature. Therefore, any increase in heat above body temperature kills the invading germs… This is a good thing!!

Second, as a result of orders from the nervous system, many-body activities speed up. Respiration increases, the heart rate rises in order to pump blood faster, breathing quickens, the skin becomes moist and clammy and the child begins to shiver. The extra work produces heat which we diagnose as a fever.

All this activity has a purpose: to eliminate the invading germ. This does not necessarily mean that your child is “sick”. While we view fever as a symptom of sickness, it is actually a function of a healthy individual. The body is doing exactly what it has been naturally programmed to do. I’d even go as far as saying that fever is an expression of health.

But as a loving parent, it is at this point that you feel you have to do something. Not necessarily. The most important things to do in the event of a “fever” is to understand why it is happening, provide supportive care and allow your child’s body to do what it needs to do with no interference.

Oftentimes parents will ask their doctor, “how high do you let the fever get, or how high is too high?” There has been mounting evidence that suggests that the “height” of fever has no bearing on the seriousness of their condition and there is absolutely no clinical evidence to suggest that high fevers cause convulsions or brain damage. I mean think about that for a second… Why would the nervous system increase the temperature to a level that will injure itself?

On its own, a high fever is not critical. However, when there are other signs of sickness, it could be an indicator of a developing serious condition that warrants your attention.

If your child is less than one year old and has a fever with the presence of any of the following signs, you should seek the advice of your health care provider:

1. The child is in severe pain and cannot be comforted

2. The child is anxious or lethargic

3. The child whines continuously

4. The child cannot retain fluids and/or has diarrhea

5. Has difficulty breathing, urinating, or swallowing

6. Has an unexplained rash and a pulse rate of over 120 beats per minute

So why do you have to take a child’s temperature when he is feverish? You don’t!! In fact, an increasing number of physicians now feel that taking a child’s temperature is an unnecessary ritual. So why do we do it? Many trace this action back to a cleverly crafted marketing campaign by the makers of fever-reducing drugs. If they can train a parent to fear the fever and think of it as something that must be treated from the very beginning, the sales of the medications would skyrocket!!

Many are beginning to lean more to the stance that lowering the child’s body temperature during a fever episode is neither necessary nor wise. Fever is not the problem, in fact, it’s the body’s beautiful attempt at a solution. Embrace the fever and comfort your child but try not to jump the gun on the administration of medication to reduce the temperature. Let the body do its thing and more times than not, the episode will be shorter than it would have been if it was treated.

At our practice, we see so many children and love educating the parents on health. Dr. Ring firmly believes that every human being on the planet would be able to live a healthier life if they were under the care of a chiropractor to ensure your body was functioning optimally.

While chiropractors have great success treating pain and other symptoms, an often overlooked benefit to chiropractic adjustments is the increased function of the immune system by increasing the function of the nervous system. We believe that every child should be checked by a chiropractor at birth and throughout childhood to ensure the proper development of the nervous system.
