Do you get neck pain after looking down at your phone or computer for too long? Many people deal with tight shoulders, sore necks, and even headaches from bad posture. This is called “tech neck,” and it can ruin your day.

Studies show tech neck is more common now because we spend hours on our screens. If you want to prevent tech neck and improve your posture every day, simple steps can make a big difference.

You will learn easy stretches, quick exercises, and smart habits to improve alignment. Stick around to discover tips you can use right away!

Understanding Tech Neck

Tech neck is a common problem today. It happens when we spend too much time looking at screens.

Identifying the Causes of Tech Neck

Looking down at your smartphone or computer for long hours strains your neck and back. This leads to pain and poor posture over time. Many people slouch when looking at screens, which causes their shoulders to round forward.

Kids, teens, and adults all face these risks with today’s screen-heavy routines.

Long periods of screen time can weaken the muscles that support your spine. These habits may lead to musculoskeletal disorders in the neck. Frequent use of devices without breaks can also put stress on nerves and joints.

Posture is not just how you sit; it’s how your body holds up every day, says Dr. Travis Ring.

Effects of Poor Posture on Body and Mind

Slouching or leaning over your screen can strain your neck and back. Over time, poor posture can lead to pain in these areas and make you feel stiff or tired. Many people get “tech neck” from using phones, tablets, or computers too much.

This condition happens when you bend your head down for long periods, which puts extra pressure on the spine. Some studies show that holding your head forward adds about 10 pounds of force for every inch it moves away from its natural position.

Poor spinal alignment also affects how you feel day-to-day. You may experience more frequent headaches or find it hard to focus at work or school because discomfort distracts you. Kids with poor posture might develop problems early unless they get preventive care, such as pediatric chiropractic visits with a doctor like Dr.

Travis Ring. Postural awareness is key; small changes each day can support both health and wellness over a lifetime… Next up are simple strategies to combat tech neck before pain takes hold.

Strategies to Combat Tech Neck

Tech neck is a common problem for many of us. Simple changes can help. Adjust your screens to eye level; this keeps your neck straight. Take breaks often, and stretch those muscles! Staying mindful of your posture throughout the day will make a big difference, too.

Adjust Screens to Eye Level

Raising screens to eye level helps prevent neck pain and reduces slouching. Stack books under your monitor or use a sturdy box if you do not have a stand. Make sure the top of the screen is just above your eyes.

This keeps your head straight and reduces stress on your neck muscles.

Keep tablets, phones, and laptops close to eye height, too. Hold them higher or prop them up with stands, pillows, or cases. Better alignment can reduce discomfort related to technology at work or at home.

You may notice less tiredness in your eyes and better posture after small changes like these.

Good posture is simple; it starts with aligning our screens to meet our gaze.

Incorporate Breaks and Stretching Routines

Taking breaks and stretching helps ease tech neck. Short pauses can make a big difference. Here are some simple ways to include these actions in your daily life.

Set a timer for every 20 minutes. Stand up and move around for a minute. This keeps your body active.

Stretch your neck gently. Tilt your head side to side, and look up and down. Hold each stretch for about 15 seconds.

Take a walk during breaks, even if it’s just around the room or office. Walking improves circulation and helps clear your mind.

Do shoulder rolls every hour. Roll them forward five times, then backward five times to relieve tension in your neck and shoulders.

Use deep breathing exercises while sitting or standing still. Inhale deeply through your nose, hold it for a moment, then exhale slowly through your mouth.

Try desk stretches like clasping your hands above your head and reaching upward to stretch your spine.

Incorporate simple yoga poses during breaks, such as the cat-cow stretch or child’s pose, to improve flexibility and mobility.

Make it a habit to change positions often while working, whether you’re sitting or standing at your desk.

Use ergonomic tools when possible to help keep proper alignment while working on screens.

Keep water close by to stay hydrated; this can help prevent stiffness caused by dehydration.

Maintain Proper Posture Throughout the Day

Sit or stand up straight. Keep your head aligned with your spine. Your ears should be over your shoulders and hips. Avoid slouching or leaning forward when using screens. It can help reduce neck strain and muscle tension.

Change positions often to stay comfortable. Take breaks every hour, if possible. Move around a bit; stretch those muscles! Good posture helps you feel better and boosts your mood and focus throughout the day.

Next, let’s explore some exercises to improve posture and relieve tech neck pain.

Exercises for Better Posture and Tech Neck Relief

To improve your posture and ease tech neck, try some simple exercises. Try chin tucks to strengthen your neck. Scapular retractions help pull your shoulders back, improving your alignment.

You can also work on isometric neck exercises to build strength without much movement…these changes really make a difference!

Perform Chin Tucks

Chin tucks are a great way to help with tech neck. They also improve your posture.

Sit or stand tall. Keep your back straight and head level.

Gently tuck your chin in towards your chest. Imagine creating a double chin.

Hold the position for 5 seconds. Focus on the stretch in your neck.

Relax and return to the starting position. Breathe normally.

Repeat 10 times. Do this exercise several times a day for the best results.

Try it while sitting at your desk, watching TV, or even driving.

Chin tucks can help relieve neck muscle tension. They promote better alignment of the cervical spine, which is essential for comfort and health.

Engage in Scapular Retractions

Engaging in scapular retractions can help improve your posture. This exercise strengthens your upper back and relieves neck pain.

Stand tall or sit up straight. Keep your shoulders relaxed.

Pull your shoulder blades back towards each other. Imagine trying to hold a pencil between them.

Hold the position for 5 seconds while breathing deeply. Focus on keeping your chest open.

Release and relax your shoulders for a moment. Take a deep breath.

Repeat the exercise 10 times each day. You can do this at work or at home.

Feel free to combine this with other stretching techniques for better results. Stretching helps keep muscles loose and flexible.

Be sure to check your screen height while you do this exercise. Keeping screens at eye level helps maintain good posture.

These actions help align your spine and reduce discomfort over time.

Strengthen Neck Muscles Isometrically

Isometric exercises help strengthen neck muscles. They improve posture and reduce pain.

Find a comfortable position, sitting or standing. Keep your back straight.

Press your head back against a wall. Hold for five seconds; relax. Repeat this ten times.

Sit upright, keeping your chin up; press your palm against your forehead. Push gently while resisting with your neck muscles. Hold for five seconds; repeat ten times.

Place both hands on the sides of your head and push lightly to resist movement. Hold for five seconds; do this ten times, too.

Try tilting your head to each side, using your hand for resistance once again. Hold for five seconds and repeat ten times on each side.

These moves will boost neck strength and stability over time. They help in correcting posture while easing pain from tech neck symptoms, too.

Conclusion

Moving your body and keeping good posture can change your life. We discussed how to spot tech neck and its causes. Adjusting screens, taking breaks, and stretching are easy steps everyone can take.

These small changes lead to less pain and more energy each day. Start today; your body will thank you!

The post How To Prevent Tech Neck And Improve Your Posture Every Day first appeared on Chiropractor Broken Arrow.

Does your neck hurt after using your phone or computer? You are not alone. Many people now get sore, stiff necks from looking down at screens for hours each day. This pain and tightness has a name: Tech Neck.

Tech neck occurs when you keep your head bent forward while looking at digital devices. This causes strain and stress on the muscles in your neck and upper back.

In this blog post, I will explain what Tech Neck is, why it happens, and how you can find treatment right here in Broken Arrow. You will also learn simple steps to prevent pain before it starts.

Keep reading for real tips to help with neck pain!

What Is Tech Neck?

Tech neck refers to the pain and discomfort caused by looking down at screens too much. Many people experience tightness in their neck and shoulders from poor posture while using phones, tablets, or computers.

Definition of Tech Neck

Chronic neck, shoulder, or upper back pain and stiffness that starts after long hours on phones or computers is the main sign of tech neck. This condition results from excessive digital device use and poor posture, such as a forward head position while looking down.

People with this issue often report musculoskeletal pain, cervical discomfort, and even headaches. Dr. Travis Ring shares.

Looking down at your screen for hours pulls your head forward, straining muscles you use every day.

These symptoms can spread to your arms or hands as nerve pathways get irritated over time. Upper back pain and tension headaches are common signs too. Tech neck can affect both kids and adults who spend several hours daily hunched over screens without moving around enough.

Common Symptoms of Tech Neck

Tech neck is a real problem for many people. It comes from looking down at screens too much. Here are the common symptoms:

Pain and stiffness in the neck and shoulders. This can make turning your head hard.

Chronic pain that does not go away easily. It can be dull or sharp in your neck and shoulders.

Headaches often occur due to strain on your neck muscles.

Muscle tension in the upper back, neck, and shoulders adds to discomfort.

Fatigue makes it hard to stay alert and focused, especially later in the day.

Discomfort while doing daily tasks or when trying to sleep.

Nerve compression might cause tingling or numbness in your arms and hands.

Next, let’s explore what causes tech neck.

Causes of Tech Neck

Tech neck often comes from spending too much time on devices. Poor posture and keeping your neck in the same position also add to the problem.

Prolonged Screen Time

Prolonged screen time, especially over 4 to 5 hours a day, is a major cause of tech neck. Hours spent looking down at phones or computers lead to forward head posture. This puts too much pressure on the spine and muscles in your neck, shoulders, and upper back.

You may notice stiff muscles, headaches, digital eye strain, and radiating pain if you spend many hours on devices without breaks.

Many people ignore early signs like sore necks or muscle aches. Over time, chronic pain may set in as the body struggles with poor posture from so much screen use. Simple lifestyle changes such as limiting daily device use help prevent long-term problems.

Focusing on good ergonomics also supports better spine health.

Tech neck often begins with small aches that grow worse with each hour spent hunched over a screen, says Dr. Travis Ring, chiropractor at Eastern Oklahoma Chiropractic in Broken Arrow.

Poor Posture While Using Devices

Poor posture while using devices can lead to tech neck. This happens when you look down at your phone or tablet for too long. Your head moves forward, straining your neck. Bad ergonomics make this worse.

If your screen is not at eye level, it forces you to bend and lean in ways you don’t want.

This position causes neck strain and tightness. You might also feel pain in your shoulders and upper back. Headaches can occur too, adding to discomfort. Over time, poor postural alignment can cause musculoskeletal pain, stiffness, and other issues affecting the spine’s health.

Static Positioning of the Neck

Static neck positioning often occurs when people look down at their devices for too long. This forward head posture can create problems. It puts extra stress on the cervical spine, which is not good for your health.

Holding your neck in this fixed position can cause neck strain and discomfort over time. Studies show that an excessive forward angle can apply up to 50 pounds of pressure to the spine.

Poor postural alignment leads to musculoskeletal pain, making daily activities harder than they should be. Changing how you use devices can help ease these issues and keep your neck healthy in the long run.

How Tech Neck Impacts Overall Health

Tech neck can cause chronic pain in your neck and shoulders. It may also lead to headaches and tired muscles, making daily tasks harder.

Chronic Neck and Shoulder Pain

Chronic neck and shoulder pain can be a real problem. Tech neck causes stiffness and strain in these areas. This condition often leads to headaches too. Many people feel pain that spreads to their arms and hands, making daily tasks harder.

It usually results from long hours of screen time with poor posture.

Poor ergonomics add to the issue, putting pressure on the spine over time. Healing from chronic tech neck may take months, often needing physical therapy for lasting relief. Simple preventive measures can help reduce this kind of pain, such as adjusting your screen height or taking regular breaks to move.

Next up is how tech neck impacts overall health beyond just discomfort.

Headaches and Muscle Fatigue

Tech neck can lead to more than just neck pain. It often causes headaches and muscle fatigue too. Headaches may be caused by stiff necks and poor posture. If you spend a lot of time staring at screens, this tension builds up over time.

Muscle fatigue appears in the upper back and shoulders after holding the same position for too long.

To fight these issues, it’s important to strengthen your upper back muscles. Simple stretching exercises can also help ease tightness. Taking regular breaks allows your body to relax and helps reduce headaches and muscle fatigue linked with tech neck.

Staying active is key for recovery and comfort!

Long-Term Spine Health Issues

Chronic neck and shoulder pain can lead to more serious problems. Long-term untreated tech neck may cause muscle imbalances in the neck and upper back. It can also result in herniated discs, which are painful and hard to fix.

This condition adds pressure on the spine, causing premature spinal aging. People might even experience radiating pain moving into their arms and hands.

Bone spurs can also form due to increased stress on the vertebral health. The cervical spine may suffer greatly from poor spinal alignment over time. Discomfort can worsen without proper care, affecting daily activities.

Seeking help early is key for better long-term outcomes; your spine will thank you later!

Effective Treatments for Tech Neck in Broken Arrow

Effective treatments for tech neck in Broken Arrow include physical therapy, chiropractic care, and specific exercises to help ease pain. These methods focus on improving posture and reducing muscle strain.

Want to learn more about how these treatments can benefit you?

Physical Therapy and Chiropractic Care

Physical therapy and chiropractic care can help with tech neck. These treatments focus on relieving pain and improving posture.

Physical therapists create personalized plans for stretching and strengthening muscles. They teach exercises to reduce neck stiffness.

Chiropractors adjust the spine to improve alignment. They also use hands-on methods to relieve pressure on nerves.

Both types of care aim for long-term relief, not just quick fixes. Chronic cases may need ongoing sessions to heal properly.

Therapists educate patients about proper posture during daily activities. This helps prevent future issues caused by screen time.

Treatments can include heat or ice therapy, which soothe sore muscles. Adjustments can ease tightness in the neck and shoulders.

Patients often notice improved range of motion after just a few visits. Relief from headaches and muscle fatigue is common too.

Finding experienced professionals in Broken Arrow is easy with local options available. Their knowledge makes a difference in recovery time.

Combining physical therapy with chiropractic care offers a well-rounded approach for pain relief and rehabilitation.

Stretching and Strengthening Exercises

Stretching and strengthening exercises help those with tech neck feel better. These exercises target the neck and upper back muscles.

Stretch your neck gently each day. This helps reduce stiffness and pain in the area.

Do upper back stretches to open up your posture. These stretches strengthen crucial muscles, reducing discomfort over time.

Perform shoulder rolls for better mobility. This simple exercise eases tension in your shoulders.

Try chin tucks to align your spine better. This activity helps correct posture while using devices.

Engage in wall angels to improve shoulder strength and flexibility. Stand against a wall, slide your arms up and down while keeping them flat against the surface.

Use resistance bands in your routine for strength building. They are great tools for exercising the upper body safely.

Focus on practicing core strengthening exercises like planks or bridges; they support overall stability and back health.

Make time for movement breaks every 20-30 minutes during device use; this improves muscle function and reduces fatigue.

Consistent practice of these stretches can lead to long-term relief from tech neck symptoms; they develop muscle flexibility necessary for good posture.

Consult with a healthcare professional if pain persists; rehabilitation exercises can provide targeted solutions suited to individual needs, supporting recovery effectively.

Ergonomic Adjustments for Daily Activities

After exploring stretching and strengthening exercises, let’s look into ergonomic adjustments for daily activities. These changes can help ease pain and prevent tech neck.

Position your screens at eye level. This keeps your neck in a natural position and reduces strain.

Maintain a distance of 20 to 30 inches from your face to the screen. This helps with comfort and prevents fatigue.

Take breaks every 20 to 30 minutes. Stand up, stretch, or change positions during these breaks.

Adopt a proper sitting posture. Keep your feet flat on the ground and support your back.

Use ergonomic chairs that provide lumbar support. This helps keep your spine aligned as you work.

Keep items you use often within easy reach. Avoid twisting or straining your body to grab things.

Utilize a headset for calls instead of cradling the phone between your shoulder and ear. This prevents neck strain during long conversations.

Adjust workstations for both sitting and standing positions. Switch it up to encourage movement throughout the day.

Making these adjustments will improve comfort while using devices and reduce tech neck symptoms over time.

Preventing Tech Neck

Good posture can help you avoid tech neck. Take regular breaks to move around and stretch your neck.

Proper Posture While Using Devices

Keep your neck straight while using devices. This helps you avoid tech neck pain. Position your screen about 20 to 30 inches away from your eyes. Make sure the top of the screen is at eye level.

This way, you do not have to bend or tilt your head.

Take breaks every 20 to 30 minutes. Stand up and stretch during these breaks. Strengthening your upper back muscles also supports good posture. Stretching your neck muscles can reduce tension too.

Postural awareness is key for better musculoskeletal health, so stay mindful of how you sit and work on devices.

Regular Breaks and Movement

Good posture is key, but regular breaks and movement are just as important for preventing tech neck. Taking breaks every 20 to 30 minutes can make a big difference. These breaks allow you to stretch and shift your position.

This helps reduce muscle strain on your neck and shoulders.

Physical activity during these breaks strengthens the upper back muscles too. Moving around can also improve your overall posture. Regularly scheduled breaks may help ease chronic pain and stiffness in the long run, leading to better neck health.

Adjusting Screen Height and Distance

Position your screen at eye level. This keeps your neck in a neutral position. Align the top of your monitor with or just below eye level. This helps reduce strain on your neck and shoulders.

Set the distance of your screen to 20-30 inches away from your eyes. This distance helps cut down on eye strain. A good setup makes it easier to work without pain, giving you more comfort during long hours.

Adjustments like these make a big difference in how you feel.

Why Seek Professional Care in Broken Arrow

Seeing a professional in Broken Arrow can make a big difference. You’ll find skilled care that fits your needs and helps ease your pain quickly.

Benefits of Local Treatment Options

Dealing with back pain or neck discomfort? You’re not alone. Many people face this struggle every day. Spinal adjustment might just be the answer you’re seeking for relief.

Chiropractors say that spinal adjustments can help ease pain. They move your spine to make it work better and hurt less. This blog will show how these adjustments work, why they help, and what kind of issues they can fix.

Ready to feel better? Keep reading!

Key Takeaways

Spinal adjustments can help with back pain, neck discomfort, and headaches by moving the spine to reduce nerve pressure.

Chiropractors use hands or tools for these adjustments. They aim to make you move better and feel less pain.

This care also improves how well you can move and your overall health without needing drugs.

It’s good for long-term relief from chronic pain issues.

Spinal adjustments in Broken Arrow offer a way to live with less pain and more movement.

What Are Spinal Adjustments?

Spinal adjustments involve applying controlled force to the spine, aiming to correct its alignment and motion. The goal is to alleviate pain, improve function, and support the body’s natural ability to heal itself.

These techniques can be performed manually by hand or using specialized tools called instruments for precise adjustments on specific areas of the spine.

Definition and purpose

Spinal adjustments are a way to fix problems in your spine. Chiropractors do them to help people move better and feel less pain. They focus on fixing spinal motion and helping the body move as it should.

This type of care works well for lower back pain, neck pain, and headaches.

The main goal is to make life more comfortable for people with these types of pains. By adjusting the spine, chiropractors can take away pressure from nerves. This lets the body heal itself.

Spinal adjustments are key in chiropractic care for managing chronic pain and improving movement in daily life.

Manual vs. instrument-assisted techniques

Choosing between manual and instrument-assisted techniques for spinal adjustments? Both have their places in providing effective pain relief. Let’s break it down with a simple comparison.

Manual Techniques

Chiropractors use their hands to apply pressure and manipulate the spine.

Includes high-velocity low amplitude (HVLA) thrusts to adjust the spine.

Often involves direct and immediate feedback on the adjustment’s effect.

Suitable for a wide range of conditions, including chronic back pain and neck pain.

Can lead to instant relief and improved mobility for many patients.

Instrument-Assisted Techniques

Tools like the Activator, a small handheld device, deliver precise adjustments.

Methods such as the COX Flexion-Distraction technique use specialized tables for treatment.

Allows for more specific and gentle adjustments, ideal for sensitive patients.

Specialized techniques like NUCCA focus on precise alignment of the neck and head.

Some patients find it less intimidating and more comfortable than manual adjustments.

Each technique, from HVLA thrusts to the Activator method, serves its purpose. Whether it’s manual adjustments freeing up your back or the gentle touch of an instrument aiding your recovery, the goal remains the same. Enhanced well-being and a life free from pain. Ready to explore how these adjustments could relieve your pain?

How Spinal Adjustments Provide Pain Relief

Spinal adjustments help by realigning the spine and relieving pressure on nerves. This can reduce chronic back pain, neck pain, and headaches.

Restoring spinal alignment

Restoring spinal alignment helps fix the spine’s position. Chiropractors press on certain spots of your spine using either their hands or tools. This can help relieve the pain and stiffness in your back to begin the healing journey.

Correcting vertebral subluxations through chiropractic adjustments relieves pain and improves function.

This treatment lowers pressure on nerves and lets your body heal itself. This service is paid for by Medicare, demonstrating its trust in this method for managing back issues.

Reducing pressure on nerves

After restoring spinal alignment, a chiropractic adjustment can reduce pressure on nerves. This is important because when the spine is out of alignment, it can put pressure on the nerves, leading to pain and discomfort.

By making precise adjustments, chiropractors can alleviate this pressure and help the body function properly. These adjustments provide natural relief without invasive procedures or medications.

Chiropractic care focuses on reducing nerve irritability responsible for causing inflammation, muscle spasm, pain, and other symptoms related to musculoskeletal problems. Manipulating the spine releases joint cavitation – commonly referred to as “cracking your back” – which reduces pressure in the joints and provides palliative relief from nerve irritation.

Conditions Treated by Spinal Adjustments

Spinal adjustments can help manage chronic back pain, neck pain, and headaches. It’s also beneficial for improving overall mobility and flexibility.

Chronic back pain

Chronic back pain is a common problem for many people. Spinal adjustments could help relieve this pain. Research indicates its effectiveness in reducing lower back pain. If you’ve had chronic back issues without improvement, reconsider your treatment plan and consult a professional healthcare provider.

Neck pain

Let’s talk about neck pain. Many people struggle with this discomfort every day. It can make simple tasks, like turning your head or looking up, a real challenge.

Neck pain often links to problems with the spine and muscles in the area. Conditions such as muscle strains, worn joints, nerve compression, injuries, and diseases can all cause neck pain.

Chiropractic care offers techniques like spinal adjustments to address these issues at their root. By aligning the spine and reducing pressure on nerves through manual or instrument-assisted methods, chiropractors aim to bring relief from persistent neck pain.

By seeking help for your neck pain early on – that’s before it becomes chronic – you can prevent more severe issues down the line.

Headaches and migraines

Headaches and migraines can be effectively managed through spinal adjustments. This chiropractic technique helps by reducing pressure on nerves and restoring spinal alignment, which in turn alleviates pain.

Research suggests that this approach is beneficial for specific types of pain, including headaches. Patients seeking relief from chronic tension headaches or migraines may find this non-invasive treatment valuable with its potential to reduce inflammation and provide pain relief.

By targeting the root cause of the issue rather than just treating symptoms, spinal adjustments offer a holistic approach to managing head pain.

Incorporating spinal manipulative therapy into your pain management plan can lead to long-term benefits. It’s essential to consult with a qualified practitioner familiar with these techniques who will customize treatments for your individual needs, ensuring you receive comprehensive care tailored specifically for your condition.

Benefits of Spinal Adjustments

Spinal adjustments can boost mobility and flexibility. They also contribute to overall well-being.

Improved mobility and flexibility

Spinal adjustments can aid in improving your ability to move and increase flexibility. These adjustments aim to improve the motion of your spine and overall body movement. Techniques used by chiropractors may include soft-tissue therapy and exercises customized to enhance mobility and flexibility, thereby supporting long-term relief from pain.

By addressing these factors, spinal adjustments play a vital role in enhancing your day-to-day comfort and well-being.

Enhanced overall well-being

Spinal adjustments can enhance your overall well-being by improving mobility and reducing pain. These adjustments help restore spinal alignment, which eases pressure on nerves and reduces inflammation.

By addressing chronic back pain, neck pain, and headaches, they provide a non-invasive alternative to prescription medications. You’ll experience improved flexibility and reduced discomfort, leading to better long-term health.

The outcome is life with less pain and more movement—a positive change for both your physical health and quality of life.

Conclusion

In conclusion, spinal adjustments can effectively relieve pain by restoring spinal alignment and reducing pressure on nerves. These adjustments present practical and efficient methods for managing chronic back pain, neck pain, and headaches.

They offer improved mobility and flexibility while enhancing overall well-being. Individuals seeking long-term relief from pain can benefit from chiropractic care.

Keep in mind, post-treatment soreness may occur after a chiropractic adjustment but is generally short-lived. Engage with direct questions or calls to action that encourage the reader to consider how they can apply what they’ve learned here.

FAQs

1. What is spinal adjustment and how does it provide pain relief?

Spinal adjustment, also known as chiropractic manipulation or manual therapy, involves the manipulation of the spine by trained practitioners like chiropractors and physical therapists to reduce musculoskeletal pain. It’s an effective method for lower back pain management and can relieve neck pain too.

2. How do chiropractic techniques like toggle drop, release work, diversified technique help in managing chronic pain?

Chiropractic techniques such as toggle drop, release work and diversified technique are specific types of spinal manipulative therapy which target joint cavitation or vertebral joints to decrease nerve irritability causing chronic pain. They’re proven methods for inflammation reduction leading to effective pain relief.

3. Can anyone undergo a spinal adjustment treatment?

Most people can benefit from spinal adjustments including those with acute back pain or slipped discs caused by musculoskeletal problems like herniated disk or sprained joints. However, certain conditions like high blood pressure or being pregnant may require special considerations before undergoing any form of manual medicine including this one.

4. Are there any side effects associated with spinal adjustments?

While most patients experience significant relief from low-back and leg pains after a session of chiropractic care, some might encounter minor discomfort in the areas treated due to changes in their range of motion post-treatment.

5. Is there scientific evidence supporting the effectiveness of spinal adjustments?

Yes! Studies conducted by organizations such as the American Chiropractic Association and the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Skin Diseases have shown that manual therapies significantly improve conditions related to low back pains compared to other alternative medicines.

6. Besides relieving body pains what other benefits can I get from regular chiropractic treatments?

Experiencing neck and back pain can impact your quality of life, making everyday activities a challenge.

There are simple daily habits you can adopt to prevent and alleviate this discomfort. By integrating these practices into your routine, you can maintain a healthier spine and enjoy a pain-free life.

1. Maintain Proper Posture Proper posture is crucial in preventing neck and back pain.

When sitting or standing, ensure your spine is aligned, shoulders are back, and feet are flat on the ground. Avoid slouching, as it puts unnecessary strain on your spine.

2. Take Regular Breaks If you have a desk job, it’s essential to take regular breaks.

Stand up, stretch, and walk around for a few minutes every hour. This practice helps reduce the tension in your back and neck muscles.

3. Use Ergonomic Furniture Invest in ergonomic furniture that supports your spine’s natural curves.

An ergonomic chair and a desk at the correct height can significantly reduce the risk of developing neck and back pain.

4. Stay Active Regular physical activity strengthens the muscles that support your spine.

Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise, such as walking, swimming, or yoga, most days of the week. Strong muscles reduce the strain on your spine, helping to prevent pain.

5. Stretch Daily Incorporate stretching into your daily routine to maintain flexibility in your neck and back.

Focus on stretches that target the spine, shoulders, and hamstrings. Stretching helps to relieve tension and prevent stiffness.

6. Lift Properly When lifting objects, use your legs rather than your back.

Keep the object close to your body and avoid twisting your torso. This technique helps to prevent injury to your spine.

7. Adjust Your Sleeping Position Your sleeping position can impact your spine health.

Sleep on your side with a pillow between your knees to maintain spinal alignment. If you sleep on your back, place a pillow under your knees to reduce lower back strain.

8. Stay Hydrated Drinking plenty of water keeps your spinal discs hydrated and healthy. Dehydrated discs can lead to back pain, so aim for at least 8 glasses of water a day.

9. Manage Stress Chronic stress can cause muscle tension in your neck and back.

Practice stress-reducing activities such as deep breathing, meditation, or spending time in nature to keep your muscles relaxed.

10. Visit a Chiropractor Regular chiropractic visits can help maintain your spine’s health.

Chiropractors can identify and address misalignments before they lead to pain. They can also provide personalized advice on posture, exercise, and lifestyle changes to prevent neck and back pain.

Preventing neck and back pain requires a proactive approach.

By adopting these daily habits, you can support your spine’s health and enjoy a pain-free life. If neck or back pain is disrupting your life, Eastern Oklahoma Chiropractic is here to help.

Pain has a sneaky way of disrupting our daily lives.

Pain reminds us that something’s amiss, whether it’s a persistent twinge in your neck or an aching back that refuses to let up. But here’s a comforting thought: just like how a mechanic tunes up a car, a chiropractor can help tune up your body.

So, the burning question is, how often should you see a chiropractor for your pain?

Understand Your Body’s Signals

Picture this: you have a garden. If you see a couple of plants starting to droop, you wouldn’t wait for the whole garden to die off before doing something about it, would you?

The same goes for when you feel uncomfortable or achy. It’s your body’s way of telling you, “Hey, something’s up.”

Ignoring those signals can lead to bigger problems later on.

The Initial Phase: Finding Relief

When you’re in the throes of acute pain, a chiropractor becomes your best ally.

Think of this as the rescue phase. During this time, it’s not uncommon to see your chiropractor 2-3 times a week. The goal here is straightforward: pain relief.

In this stage, which usually lasts a few weeks, your chiropractor examines the root cause of your pain. With precise adjustments and treatments, they work to alleviate the immediate discomfort.

It’s like dousing flames before rebuilding a structure.

The Corrective Phase: Strengthen and Heal

After the pain has subsided, it’s time to address its underlying causes.

It could be a postural issue, or it could be a deeper spinal misalignment. This phase is more spaced out, often involving visits once a week or every two weeks.

Think of this as rehabilitating that garden, ensuring the soil is nutrient-rich and the environment optimal for growth.

Maintenance Phase: Keep the Balance

Now, your pain is under control, and underlying issues have been addressed.

But just like you wouldn’t abandon that garden after the flowers bloom, you shouldn’t neglect regular check-ins with your chiropractor. Monthly visits, or sometimes even longer intervals, can be sufficient.

This is about maintaining the good health you’ve achieved catching any potential issues before they escalate.

Listen to Your Body and Your Chiropractor

The frequency of visits varies for everyone.

It’s based on your specific pain, your body’s needs, and the recommendations of your trusted chiropractor. After all, everyone’s garden is unique.

At Eastern Oklahoma Chiropractic, we’re dedicated to understanding your needs and crafting a care plan that brings out the best in your health. Just as a garden thrives with regular attention and care, so does your body with chiropractic adjustments.

If pain is disrupting your life or you’re curious about preventative care, don’t wait.

Give us a call at 918-940-4630. Let us be the guiding hand that helps your body blossom to its fullest potential.

The post How Often Should You See a Chiropractor for Your Pain? first appeared on Chiropractor Broken Arrow.

Most of us are aware that our spines weren’t designed to do all the sitting we do in modern life. For good health, our bodies need to move.

One of the simplest and most effective types of exercise we at Eastern Oklahoma Chiropractic recommend is walking. Walking fits ideally into the chiropractic philosophy of holistic, natural remedies for pain.

How Lack of Exercise Hurts Your Spine

When you don’t get regular exercise, your spine suffers. Back pain is often caused and aggravated by spinal misalignments and weak muscles in your core.

Lack of exercise also causes spinal discs to degenerate. Normal healthy discs hold fluids and act as cushions between your vertebrae. Walking promotes the good circulation and healing you need for a healthy spine.

Anxiety about pain can also inhibit you from exercising, making you even more prone to injury.

The Many Benefits of Taking a Walk

Regular walks improve your health in multiple ways, such as:

Improved circulation throughout your body. This helps to rehydrate the discs of your spine to prevent mobility problems and pain.

Increased immunity that lowers your risk of illnesses such as heart disease and osteoporosis.

More strength in your core, hips, legs, and feet. Walking strengthens back and abdominal muscles, allowing them to support joints, ligaments, and spinal discs properly.

Improved mobility, flexibility, and balance. A stiff back is more prone to pain and injury. Exercise helps to prevent pain and injury by maintaining flexibility in the connective fibers that help to support the spine.

Better sleep and weight control.

Psychological benefits. Walking and other types of exercise naturally cause your body to release endorphins. These chemicals affect receptors in your brain that reduce pain and give you a feeling of well-being.

Tips for a Productive Walking Program

Regular walking can help heal many back problems, minimizing pain or preventing it from returning. It’s a great therapy that you can begin doing immediately and with minimal equipment.

If you’re out of practice, start gradually. Walk around the block to start. Add one minute to your time each day.

Walk fast enough that you raise your heart rate but can still talk.

Commit to exercise daily regardless of bad weather. Even marching in place in front of the TV gets you moving.

Listen to your body—if the pain is severe or increases during or after the walk, see your healthcare provider for an exam to determine the cause before resuming your walking program.

Exercise as Part of Your Chiropractic Care

Your chiropractor diagnoses joint and spinal issues that cause pain and serves as a great source of information about increasing your mobility and strength.

Walking complements your chiropractic treatments. Both make your spine stronger and healthier, using natural, safe, non-drug methods.

Regular chiropractic adjustments align your spine and strengthen back muscles. Your chiropractic treatments and daily walks help to retain that alignment. Then you can walk for longer periods of time, build up your strength and reap all the benefits of a healthy spine!

The spine is a wondrous structure that enables our bodies to be active and productive. Sometimes, though, the spine curves away from its normal shape and can reduce the quality of life. This condition is known as scoliosis, and it affects about three percent of people. It’s one of the conditions we commonly see, diagnose, and treat at Eastern Oklahoma Chiropractic.

What Causes Scoliosis?

If you have scoliosis, your spine, rather than being straight, becomes abnormally curved in an ‘S’ or ‘C’ shape.

Scoliosis is most often diagnosed in children and adolescents. As a child grows, the curve may become worse. Fortunately, most cases of scoliosis are mild, needing minimal treatment, and affect girls and boys equally. However, girls are more likely than boys to suffer from more rare, severe types of progressive scoliosis that lead to health problems.

Scoliosis is usually considered idiopathic, meaning that there’s no known cause. Other causes include:

Birth defects impacting the spine

Spinal infections or injuries

Neuromuscular disorders like muscular dystrophy or cerebral palsy

Previous surgeries

Adults Can Develop Scoliosis, Too

Although most cases are discovered between ages 10 and 15, sometimes people aren’t diagnosed until adulthood.

More commonly, adults develop a type called degenerative scoliosis. Normal wear and tear, arthritis and osteoporosis can cause joints and spinal discs to degenerate, making the spine weaker. This causes it to move out of normal alignment. Adults often suffer more mobility problems and discomfort from scoliosis than younger people.

Common Symptoms of Scoliosis

Getting early treatment is important. Many schools screen children for scoliosis, and often the signs are visible to others. Parents should check their children for irregularities such as:

A hip that’s higher than the other

A protruding shoulder blade

Shoulders or rib cage that look uneven

A waist that looks lopsided

A crooked spine that can be seen when the affected person bends forward

A spinal curve that becomes severe can cause serious health problems, such as pain, limited mobility, and breathing problems from reduced lung capacity. Treatments for advanced scoliosis include braces and sometimes surgery. However, even mild cases need to be monitored to keep track of changes in the curve as the child grows.

Chiropractic Care as Part of Your Scoliosis Treatment Plan

Adults and children with scoliosis, whether mild or severe, benefit from chiropractic treatments as part of their care program.

As an expert in spinal care, your chiropractor diagnoses scoliosis and provides therapies that complement your other medical care in important ways. They’ll advise you on the best ways to move, and provide exercises to strengthen joints. Chiropractic treatments help to improve mobility, core strength, nervous system function, and posture, as well as relieve muscle tension and pain.

Chiropractic care for scoliosis has the advantage of being drug-free and noninvasive as it helps you or your child to relieve symptoms and move forward with a healthy life.

One of the most common reasons people seek out a chiropractor is for neck pain. At some point in life, in fact, about 70 percent of us will suffer from neck pain and loss of mobility.

Chiropractic treatments at Eastern Oklahoma Chiropractic successfully resolve your pain and mobility problems, with results that even carry over to other parts of the body. As time goes by, new discoveries continue adding to the evidence of the whole-body benefits of chiropractic care.

Advancements in Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic adjustments have a longer history than many people realize. The original developer of chiropractic care, Daniel David Palmer, performed his first spinal adjustment in 1895 after extensive study of physiology and anatomy.

Today, all 50 states officially recognize the status of chiropractic care as a health care profession.

A big development in chiropractic science comes with the growing evidence of interdependence between regions of the spine and other parts of the body. It’s now known that misalignments in one part of the spine can impinge on nerves, increase levels of stress hormones and inflammation, and interfere with the nervous system, causing symptoms in multiple areas. Chiropractic adjustments bring your spine’s alignment into its natural positioning, allowing your nervous system to control your body’s functions free from interference.

The prevalence of spinal problems is going up everywhere, often due to technology use and poor body positions during work. Advances in chiropractic therapies are helping more and more people to find relief for their pain and mobility issues.

Studies Confirm Neck Adjustments Relieve Symptoms Beyond the Neck

In 2020, researchers carried out a large review of scientific articles describing the results of studies on spinal manipulations.

The study parameters were strictly focused on peer-reviewed scientific articles that described randomized controlled studies of cervical (neck) manipulations on people with various musculoskeletal conditions.

Results showed that patients experienced improved levels of mobility, pain relief and strength after neck adjustments.

In addition, an exciting part of the research confirmed that spinal adjustments of the neck were effective not just for the treated area, but also led to improvements in more distant parts of the body. After their neck manipulations, study subjects got additional relief from pain and mobility problems in their shoulders, TMJ (temporomandibular joint of the jaw) and elbows.

Relief Throughout the Body with Chiropractic Care

People with neck misalignments often report a variety of symptoms that go beyond neck pain. They may suffer from headaches, dizziness, strength loss, arm pain and tingling, stiffness, or other problems.

Chiropractors see evidence every day of how chiropractic treatments resolve symptoms in multiple parts of the body, in addition to the primary area.

Whether you’re struggling with discomfort in your neck or anywhere else, a customized chiropractic plan at Eastern Oklahoma Chiropractic can soon have you on the way to overall pain relief and better mobility.

Whiplash is a common injury that happens when an impact throws a person’s head abruptly backward and then forward. The blow may damage bones, ligaments, muscles, nerves, and other parts of the spine and neck.

It’s essential to be aware that whiplash is not always an obvious injury. You may sustain damage without being aware of it. Even minor impacts can cause long-term harm to your spine and other areas if left untreated. At Eastern Oklahoma Chiropractic, we provide expert care to diagnose and help to minimize injuries from whiplash.

Symptoms of Whiplash

Whiplash gets its name from the whip-cracking type of forceful motion someone’s neck receives in an impact. It’s typically caused by car accidents, falls, sports injuries, and physical abuse such as being punched or shaken.

Symptoms of whiplash include:

Headaches

Dizziness

Lost range of neck motion

Pain and stiffness in the neck

Numbness in the arms

Fatigue

Blurred vision

Problems with memory and concentration

Silent Damage from Low-Speed Whiplash

Although whiplash often comes from high-speed impacts, sometimes it results from rear-end auto collisions as low as five miles per hour. Or from bumps in everyday sports or play that may not show immediate symptoms.

Someone who experiences this more subtle impact might feel mild symptoms such as headache, or even no signs, and may assume that all is well. However, muscles and joints can become strained or moved out of proper alignment, leading to a gradual progression of misalignment if it goes untreated. We often think that if we’re not in pain after an impact, we’re not injured. But pain can also show up much later, after tissue, joint, or nerve damage from even minor effects causes wear and tear that builds up over time.

You’re at higher risk for long-term problems if you’ve had whiplash before or if you already had neck or back pain before suffering the whiplash. That’s why your spine and neck’s alignment and strength is so vital to your ability to weather a whiplash injury with minimal damage and an excellent long-term outcome.

Benefits of Chiropractic Treatments for Whiplash

Regular visits with your chiropractor help you feel confident, knowing that if you do experience an impact on your neck, your joints and muscles are in their best possible shape to withstand the injury. If you’re involved in a low-speed collision, a full chiropractic evaluation can diagnose even those silent misalignments that may progress over time.

Today, women know more than ever about having a healthy pregnancy with minimal discomfort through natural remedies and a healthy lifestyle. Safe, holistic chiropractic treatment is one of the critical building blocks of a pain-free pregnancy. At Eastern Oklahoma Chiropractic, we’re committed to helping pregnant women and all of our patients be proactive in achieving their best health.

Types of Pain in Pregnancy

Pain is stressful and can cause health problems in mothers and unborn babies—discomfort results from increased strain on the spine, muscles, and joints during pregnancy. Addressing the cause of pain early is best before it worsens.

Generalized low back pain often comes from increased weight in the abdomen and changes in the center of gravity and posture.

Some other painful conditions in pregnancy can also be helped by chiropractic care:

Round ligament pain. Round ligaments connect the uterus to the abdominal wall. When the uterus gets bigger, stretching of these ligaments can cause pain around the pubic bone or abdomen.

Sacroiliac pain. The sacroiliac joints connect your lower spine and pelvis. When surrounding ligaments relax due to hormone changes, the joints can move in new ways, causing pain.

Sciatic pain. The growing baby, and increased rigidity in muscle tone, can pressure the sciatic nerve, causing nerve pain that affects the lower back and often shoots down the leg.

Women have many options for mitigating these pain-causing conditions of pregnancy with healthy lifestyle habits and chiropractic treatment.

Elements of a Healthy, Pain-free Pregnancy

Eat a balanced diet. Most women should consume around an extra 300 calories of nutritious foods per day. Avoiding sugar is important to keep weight down, and the immune system is functioning well. Some of the nutritional elements of a nutritious diet include:

Fruits and vegetables.

Folic acid (found in dark green leafy vegetables).

Calcium and vitamin C-rich foods.

Whole grains.

Plenty of protein (especially in the second and third trimesters).

Exercise. Getting regular moderate exercise during pregnancy is important for keeping a good fitness level in preparation for labor rigors, maintaining a healthy weight, and reducing pain. Pregnant women should consult with their doctor about a safe, healthy level of exercise for them.

Chiropractic Care. Research has shown that prenatal care from both an obstetrician and a chiropractor is more beneficial than obstetrical care alone. In one study, 94% of women receiving chiropractic treatment showed a clinically important improvement in their pain symptoms.

How a Chiropractor Helps to Relieve Pain

Spinal adjustments keep your musculoskeletal system in alignment; it needs to move properly throughout pregnancy. Your spine impacts how your nervous system, brain, and entire body function. When you achieve good posture, you enable your spine to function at its best in assisting your body’s breathing, hormone production, movement, and overall health. All are important components of a healthy, pain-free pregnancy!
